Introduction
In December 2022, I stepped into a field I never imagined I would be part of the mental health field.
If you had asked me years ago, I would have never seen myself working so closely with individuals facing serious mental health challenges.
And yet today, I can confidently say:
This work has changed me.
An Unexpected Path
I currently work in a psychiatric state hospital as a Benefit Specialist Social Worker.
In my role, I help patients apply for:
- Social Security
- Medicaid
- Food assistance (SNAP)
- Auxiliary grants
Most of the individuals I work with are diagnosed with one or more mental health disorders.
This environment is not easy.
It is emotionally demanding, mentally challenging, and not for everyone. I’ve seen many people come and go some in less than six months.
And yet, by God’s grace, I’ve remained here for over three years.
Finding Purpose in the Work
Despite the challenges, there is something deeply rewarding about helping people navigate systems that often feel overwhelming.
Even when I cannot solve everything, I know that the small role I play can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
And that matters.
A Full-Circle Moment
For over three years, I have also been following Zion Prayer Movement Outreach.
One of the most inspiring developments has been the work of Prophet Evangelist Ebuka Anosie Obi, who facilitated the construction of a psychiatric hospital in Anambra State, Nigeria.
This deeply resonated with me.
Growing up in Nigeria, I often saw individuals with untreated mental health conditions on the streets. I would wonder:
Why isn’t there a system to support them?
Now, years later, I find myself:
- Working in the mental health field
- Supporting a movement that is building solutions
- Contributing, even in a small way, to real change
Giving Back Through Purpose
This connection led me to support the Seraphic Home Foundation, which contributes to:
- Psychiatric care
- Orphanages
- Other philanthropic initiatives
For me, this is more than just giving.
It’s alignment.
I’ve always had a desire to be part of something bigger to contribute to meaningful change. And this is one way I’m able to do that.
Mental Health in Nigeria: A Silent Struggle
One thing that stands out to me is the difference in how mental health is perceived.
In Nigeria, mental health is often overlooked or misunderstood.
It is not prioritized the way it should be.
But the reality is:
Mental health challenges exist everywhere whether they are acknowledged or not.
If proper data were collected, I truly believe we would see just how many people are silently struggling.
Breaking the Stigma
Through this blog, I want to be part of the movement that changes that narrative.
I want to help create a space where people feel safe to say:
- “I’m struggling”
- “I need help”
- “I’m not okay”
Because there is no shame in that.
Health Is Truly Wealth
We often hear the phrase “health is wealth.”
But many people only think of physical health.
The truth is:
Health includes:
- Mental health
- Emotional well-being
- Spiritual health
You can look fine on the outside and still be battling internally.
And that matters just as much.
A Message to Mothers and Women
As a mother myself, I understand how overwhelming life can get.
Balancing:
- Children
- Marriage
- Work
- Responsibilities
It can take a toll.
There are moments when you feel like you need help but don’t know where to turn.
That’s why support systems are so important.
You Are Not Alone
I want to encourage every woman reading this:
Speak up. Share your struggles. Seek support.
Because what you’re going through someone else is going through it too.
There’s a saying:
“A problem shared is a problem half solved.”
You don’t have to carry everything alone.
The Need for Accessible Support
In many places, especially back home, access to therapy and mental health support is limited.
But I believe we can change that starting with awareness, conversations, and community.
I look forward to a future where:
- Mental health is openly discussed
- Support is easily accessible
- No one feels ashamed to seek help
Final Thoughts
This journey into mental health was unexpected.
But now, I see it as part of my purpose.
Through my work, my experiences, and this platform, I hope to:
- Educate
- Encourage
- Advocate
Because at the end of the day:
Your mental health matters.
Just as much as your physical health.
Closing Reflection
I am still learning.
Still growing.
Still walking in purpose.
But one thing I know for sure is this:
Health is truly wealth and that includes your mind.
If this message spoke to you, share it with someone who may need encouragement.
And if you’ve been silently struggling, let this be your reminder:
You don’t have to go through it alone.
